Position Summary
The Canadian Tobacco Research Foundation (CTRF) is seeking a dedicated Agronomy Technician to support its applied and basic research programs focused on flue-cured tobacco production in Southwestern Ontario. The successful candidate will work closely with our research and technical teams to assist in field and lab activities related to plant breeding, agronomy, and plant protection.
This position offers hands-on experience with the implementation of breeding and protection strategies, including planting, data collection, crop monitoring, and laboratory support. The role will be integrated into Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Plant Protection programs to support ongoing research and contribute to the development of improved crop varieties and disease management strategies.
1. A degree in Agronomy, plant Sciences, Crop Sciences, or related field
2. Experience in Field research, crop management, or plant breeding techniques
3. Basic understanding of plant health, soil management, and pest disease diagnostics
4. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in collecting and recording data
5. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in both field and lab settings
6. Physically capable of working outdoors under variable conditions
7. Valid driver license
8. The applicant must be eligible to work in Canada
Requirements
1. Assist with field trial setup, maintenance, and data collection throughout the growing season.
2. Support breeding activities such as transplanting, crossing, harvesting, and seed processing.
3. Contribute to pest and disease monitoring, sample collection, and plant health assessments.
4. Maintain records, enter data, and assist in compiling reports.
5. Operate field equipment and assist with greenhouse and seed storage activities as required.
6. Coordinate with team members to ensure smooth execution of experiments and seasonal research goals.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Previous experience in tobacco or other row crop production.
2. Familiarity with agricultural equipment and field plot design.
3. Experience in laboratory procedures such as sample preparation, weighing, or microscopy.
4. Strong interest in agricultural innovation, crop improvement, and sustainable practices.
