Temporary GIS Technician
Position: GIS Technician
Organization: ALUS Canada—www.alus.ca Location: Anywhere in Ontario. Preference for applicants from Eastern Ontario, but not a requirement.
Type: 16-week temporary full-time contract. May 4, 2026 – Aug 21, 2026.
This position is contingent on receiving funding support from the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must fit the following criteria:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period.
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and
• have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a highly organized, self-motivated GIS Technician to support the compilation, analysis, organization, and visualization of spatial data and related assets. Using ArcGIS or an equivalent Geographical Information Systems (GIS), this individual will create maps, develop spatial databases, and compile and align internal and external datasets to enhance the value of ALUS’s data for informed decision-making at both national and community levels. The ideal candidate is proactive, works well independently, and consistently follows through to advance tasks reliably.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Create and maintain GIS databases, data layers, and metadata to inform project outcomes and ensure accuracy and consistency
• Perform GIS quality control on shapefiles and satellite/drone imagery to identify data issues, correct errors, fill in missing attributes, and ensure the overall accuracy and consistency of geospatial datasets
• Perform a range of spatial analyses- including spatial overlays, buffer analyses, land-cover classification, and habitat connectivity modelling - and fully document methods and workflows to ensure reproducibility and data transparency
• Identify standardized external datasets suitable for integration into the ALUS database to enhance data quality, usability, and consistency
• Support the review and integration of field-collected data, remote sensing, and partner datasets into the ALUS geodatabase
• Produce visually compelling maps, figures, and spatial summaries for reports, presentations, funding proposals, communications, and storytelling initiatives
• Draft mapping guidelines and standards to ensure consistency and alignment with ALUS branding guidelines across all geospatial outputs
• Develop a GIS library of quick-reference overlays to streamline map development
• Support the development of a GIS Strategy
SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES AND EXPERIENCE
• At least one year work experience with ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Pro)
• Experience with ArcGIS Online, including publishing services, creating online mapping products (storymaps, dashboards, web apps), and using integrated products such as Survey123 and ESRI Field Maps
• Ability to create, update, manipulate, analyze, and document spatial and non-spatial data
• Knowledge of and proficiency with ESRI geoprocessing tools and basic spatial analysis methodology
• Knowledge of, and experience in, environmental monitoring or conservation.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND COMPENSATION
• You will report to and work collaboratively with ALUS’ Director of Data and Analytics.
• Normal working hours are Monday to Friday; 35 hours per week.
• You will be paid at an hourly rate of $22.50/hour.
• ALUS Canada does not have a centralized office space; The person will work from a home office, which may be located anywhere in Ontario with reliable access to high-speed internet and a safe, ergonomic, and private workspace. Preference may be given to applicants working from Eastern Ontario.
• Some travel may be required to attend field visits, events, and in-person team meetings.
• Possible opportunity to attend ALUS’ National Field Conference in Steinbach MB in July.
